Founded in 2003, Vinmark International Dance Company is more than a dance studio— it is a movement dedicated to cultural education and community impact. Going out to meet the community where they are, Vinmark brings dance education to schools, after-school programs, daycares, and other learning spaces.
With a guiding philosophy of “Once you start walking, we teach you,” Vinmark offers classes for students as young as two years old, with its oldest student to date being 91. The program promotes cultural competence through dance. By immersing students in global dance traditions, Vinmark allows students to step outside their own world, breaking down cultural barriers and building understanding.
At the heart of this mission is founder Emonie Whitley, who believes deeply in the power of dance to connect people. “We don’t look the same or come from the same places, but we all want love,” she tells her students regularly in class. Her work is influenced by her connection to the Hispanic community and the stories of struggle and resilience she hears from Hispanic and Indigenous friends. Vinmark focuses on Title 1 schools, where many students face economic hardships and are unaware of the possibilities. “I meet lots of kids that think what they see is all there is. Many of them feel stuck”, Whitley says. By introducing them to dance styles from around the world—such as Bollywood, West African dance, Latin styles like Salsa and Bachata, and contemporary forms like Hip Hop and Jazz—she helps expand their view of the world and the opportunities that are available to them.
The Arts Council of Greater Greensboro supports Vinmark through Grassroots grant funding, a partnership that has strengthened the program.
“It created an awesome connection,” says Whitley. “The ACGG helps me do this, and they share opportunities I wouldn’t have known about.”

Since 2004, Vinmark has hosted two showcases each year. This summer’s showcase will highlight multicultural dance, with more details on the date and location to come. As Vinmark continues its legacy, they ensure that every movement tells a story, and every step brings people closer together.
