Sternberger Artists Center

Applications are accepted for current vacancies on an ongoing basis and may remain on file for up to two years. The application asks for your name, address, email, phone, artistic practice, artist statement, website or social media link, CV or resume, a current work sample, discipline, demographic profile, and gender.

The following information will be required from the building manager, Roach Realty, if your application is approved: Social Security number, driver’s license number and state, and monthly income with verification. The applicant permits The Arts Council of Greater Greensboro or its agent Roach Realty to investigate the information supplied on this application, and full disclosure of pertinent facts may be made to the landlord. The approval process includes a review of credit history and a criminal background check. By submitting the application, the applicant declares that the information provided is true and correct. False statements or information may result in the rejection of this and future applications for properties managed by Roach Realty, Inc.

The Arts Council of Greater Greensboro accepts applications for current vacancies on an ongoing basis and reviews them as space becomes available. The SAC building manager reviews all applications and maintains waiting lists for up to two years. After two years, applicants must resubmit if they are still interested. If the building manager has a conflict of interest, they recuse themselves. Applicants may request a review of a rejected application by the Sternberger Commission in writing within 30 days of the rejection notice. That decision is final.

• The applicant’s artistic medium should contribute to a balance of disciplines, including visual art, literature, and performing arts.
• The applicant’s practice should be compatible with others sharing the studio space.
• The CV or resume and portfolio must demonstrate a strong commitment to artmaking.
• The applicant is encouraged to support SAC’s public programs and neighborhood gatherings.
• The applicant must commit to using the studio regularly. Studios cannot be used for storage only.
• The applicant must provide three personal references.
• If more than one artist qualifies, preference is given based on Greensboro residence and the date of application.
• The artist must conduct activities in alignment with the tax-exempt mission of The ACGG.
• Studios are for original artmaking only. Teaching in the studio requires written approval.
• The artist must deposit first-month rent and a $50 security deposit at the signing of the lease.

• Studio artists clean their studios and report needed repairs promptly.
• Artists dispose of debris, garbage, and recycling in the kitchen. SAC does not provide studio collection services.
• The buildings are heated and air-conditioned. Artists cannot use heaters or AC units requiring electricity. An electrical fan needs permission from management.
• Tenants clean common areas, including the conference room, solarium, kitchen, bathrooms, foyers, and parking area.
• The basement, attic, and other common areas are not for storage.
• SAC processes a background check before signing a lease. Lease terms generally run for one year.
• Pay rent in full and on time. Rent is due on the first day of the month and late on the 5th.
• Carry renter’s insurance on studio contents.
• Tenants are encouraged to take part in two ACGG studio events a year, reduce waste, keep SAC clean and quiet, promote SAC and The ACGG, and attend tenant meetings.

The Sternberger Artists Center occupies a historic 1926 Mediterranean-style villa at 712 Summit Avenue. It was designed by architect Harry Barton and built by Sigmund Sternberger, treasurer of Revolution Mill and director of Cone Mills Corporation. The property was gifted through the Sigmund Sternberger Foundation in 1971 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. Today it offers 16 affordable studios. With support from the Tannenbaum-Sternberger Foundation, the center hosts neighborhood events, supports local schools and nonprofits, and welcomes musicians each June for Dunleath Porchfest.
